This course offers a complete immersion in the traditional practice of icon painting, focusing on the Byzantine technique of egg tempera and gilding with pure gold. It is intended for both beginners and experienced artists who wish to deepen their skills in sacred art. Throughout the sessions, the Pantocrator of Mount Sinai will be recreated, a 6th-century work that has become an essential reference in the history of iconography.
Programme
Introduction and preparation of the panel
History and function of icons; presentation of materials and tools; selection and preparation of the panel;
Polishing, drawing and gilding
Polishing the surface; transferring the drawing according to medieval methods; introduction to gilding; preparation with Armenian cake. Application of gold leaf using Byzantine methods.
Egg tempera
Making the paint; application of layers of Proplasmos; mixing colours; practice of shading and light according to the Greek method.
Development of the painting and symbolism
Application of thin glazes; details and ornaments; study of the symbolism of layers of light.
Finishing and presentation
Theory on varnishing and conservation (with prolonged drying); preservation care;
Expected Results
By the end of the course, each participant will understand the entire process of creating an icon—from preparing the panel to gilding and final painting. Students will master the egg tempera technique and gain a solid understanding of the symbolic and spiritual foundations of the Byzantine tradition.
